Long-Term Development of Lishu Institute

A Place of Sanctuary

It has long been Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche's dream to provide his serious students with a way to continue to integrate the teachings into their very way of life. Both the "single lifetime land" opportunity and wellness center ideas are methods to do that in the healthy, supportive and financially viable environment of India. Neither of these areas are meant to provide a full time, year round residential opportunity. Rather these programs are designed to support a deepening integration of practice and way of life to be brought back to the practitioner's home country.



Residential Units

Single Lifetime Opportunities on Land adjacent to Lishu Institute:

During March 2009, Rinpoche visited and camped on the Lishu land in Kotra Kalyanpur. On that trip he identified two more parcels of land that he would like to purchase for the development of "single lifetime use" residential units. He has spoken to architects and contractors about approximate costs and designs. He has asked that the interest level of the international sangha be assessed for the opportunity described below. At this time only Indian citizens are able to own land within India. To create this opportunity, Lishu will arrange to purchase the  two parcels of land and construct an eight unit residential building whose design will be compatible with other Lishu Institute buildings. There will be studio and two-bedroom units.The first offering will be for the “purchase for a single life time” of a unit within this building.

Here's how it will work. The purchaser will pay for the unit, and have full use of it at any time within a specified annual usage limit. Before the beginnng of each year, the owner will be asked to specify dates of usage of the unit. Although ownership and control of the land and unit will always be in Lishu’s name, the puchaser will have first choice of the dates of use, and full use of the unit within a specific usage limit. Once the purchaser has "bought the unit for a single lifetime"  neither the control nor the use of the unit will be marketable or transferable. Maintenance will be the responsibility of Lishu Institute. When not in use by the owner, the unit will be used by Lishu Institute to house other program participants. All income from the units will go to Lishu. The owner can maintain a locked storage area for personal belongings when not present. Upon the death of the purchaser, full ownership transfers to Lishu Institute outright.

One could consider this a donation with benefits that will support the development of Lishu Institute and the acquisition of adjacent land to provide for Lishu's growth. Subsequent offerings will not be as generous. This will be the only time that a practitioner will be offered the chance to secure the private use of a unit for an extended period of time each year, to store their belongings and furnish their unit. In the future there will only be opportunities to make  “single lifetime rentals” of a unit for a specified time each year at a specific cost based on the size of unit and length of time requested. Availability will be on a first-come, first-served basis.



Establishment of a Wellness Center:

This is one of the longest term goals, and a part of Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche's vision for Lishu Institute. Rinpoche would like to create a place of healing for students who have devoted themselves to a spiritual life. He envisions a wellness clinic and spa so that his students would have the possibility of spending a part of the year at Lishu in the nourishing climate and economic situation within India The clinic would focus on nourishing the body with food and exercise, and nourishing the spirit and mind with practice. Both Tibetan and Ayervedic medical systems will be provided.
